In a town where diversity is a fact of life and appearance is an art form, your choice of attire can open — or close — a lot of doors.
Founded on the notion that when you look good, you feel good, a new organization in Savannah is dressing women for success from the inside out. Dress for Success is a national nonprofit dedicated to helping individual women find their places in the work force. Pearine Reed, director of Dress for Success Savannah, established the local chapter in the spring of 2010.
How can a language degree turn into a culinary career? Ask the owner and chef of Swank Bistro.
Michele Jemison was a student of sociology, anthropology and French when she started working in restaurants for a little spending money. That part-time job eventually led her to work with James Beard award winner Ben Barker of the Magnolia Grill in Durham, N.C.
“I worked a few stations in his Pop’s Italian trattoria as garde manger and grill cook,” recalls the unpretentiously funny chef. “When (Barker) hired me, I said to myself, garde-me-what? But I closely watched everything and took it all in.”When it came time to strike out on her own, Jemison opened The Red Door on Wilmington Island to rave reviews — just as the economy took its infamous turn for the worse. So Jemison regrouped and launched her latest venture, Swank Bistro, on Diamond Causeway, where she serves “local fare with a French flair.” On the menu, local seafood bouillabaisse, homemade pasta and scrumptious duck and rabbit dishes team up with a lamb shank osso buco that guests call ahead to reserve.
As our hottest season rages on, weary trend victims seek relief from the endless fashion fiesta. Michael Fink, SCAD’s dean of fashion, points to the blue horizon.
Dorothy Parker’s acerbic observation that Katherine Hepburn’s acting ran “the emotional gamut from A to B” can also be applied to the Spring/Summer runways. Limited color, limited pattern, limited design. The fashion world’s continuing fascination with minimalism and heritage looks is turning into one big yawn. Enough already.
Yes, there are stripes of all sizes (already discussed in a previous issue), the occasional 1960s hippie print and some bold color blocking ideas inspired by the master colorist, Mr. Saint Laurent. Regrettably, these are the exceptions, not the rule. I’ve been reviewing the spring shows again, trying not to nod off, looking for some moments that give, if not an adrenaline rush, at least a smile or two. Those moments happen to be in blue.
