“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is hitting Savannah! As of tomorrow, the wait is over and the lucky family and their surprise excitement are finally going to be revealed! As in any small town, talk has spread like wildfire throughout Savannah. Everyone’s dying to know who the lucky family is and where exactly this house is located. Believe me, it has been the gossip fodder for Savannah over the last couple of weeks and I can’t wait to find out who it is!

Excitement is definitely in the air around town and I like the fact that it’s about helping someone else. Like others, Abshire PR happily joined in and helped with the press and distribution as well as gathering volunteers.

Originally, the Extreme Makeover crew stalked Home Depot in an attempt to try and find someone in the midst of a renovation project. The first gentleman they used actually had a bit of cash, but was renovating his bathroom and needed help, so the show gave it a go. In the end, there just wasn’t a whole lot of excitement about helping someone who could help themselves.

It was later, after the show wrapped, that the head executive producer was driving down the road and happened to notice a particular house in total disarray.  So he turned around and rode by a second time and looked at the family outside, a lady and her daughter. On the third conspicuous pass, the lady and her daughter were looking at him this time and he decided to stop. Getting out, he asked them rather pointedly why the house was in such bad shape. The lady, slightly offended, explained that her daughter had been diagnosed with leukemia and all of the family’s money went towards her medical bills. It was that moment when the face of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was reborn and the Powers family received their happy ending. Full Story

This is what it’s all about – doing something for somebody else. I like it. I think Savannah likes it. It’s what we’re all about.
